The final F1 season of the 20th century certainly was a memorable one - time to relive it with the new F1 1999 Season pack for Automobilista 2!

The V10 era in Formula One is undoubtedly one of the most popular ones among fans. Having started in 1989 with the first V10 engines on the grid after the ban on turbos, the ten-cylinder motor would be the go-to for every single team on the grid by 1998, with Tyrrell and Minardi being the last teams to still run a V8 in 1997. Well, technically, the infamous Mastercard Lola team as well, but that could have hardly been considered as actually running.

Anyway, between 1998 and 2005, an F1 grid always consisted solely of V10-powered cars. As a result, it is no surprise that Reiza Studios include two generations of cars from that era in Automobilista 2 - the Formula V10 Gen 1, a circa 1997 car alongside that year's McLaren MP4/12 and the Gen 2, technically a 2001 car.

Skin packs for the 2001 and 2000 seasons are already available for the car, but @Immersion Modding Group now takes a further step back with the release of their F1 1999 Season pack. The masters of historic F1 packs for AMS2 throw it back to one of the wildest seasons of modern F1 that almost saw a World Champion that hardly anyone would have bet on prior to the season.

What happened, you might ask? Well, look no further than our article on the Ferrari F399 mod for Assetto Corsa, which includes an overview over the season that eventually saw Häkkinen take his second title despite several McLaren mishaps on the way.

F1 1999 For AMS2 - XML Selector Included

As the grid was shaken up multiple times over the course of the season, the 1999 F1 Season pack is a prime example for the use of the XML selector IMG has introduced to its season packs. In this case, five scenarios are available - four to reflect driver changes throughout the year, and one for pre-season testing that features two distinct BAR liveries instead of the infamous zipper livery the team used throughout the year.

The latter also includes test liveries for a certain 18-year-old Spaniard by the name of Fernando Alonso who would go on to race in F1 in 2001, and even one for Jos Verstappen and the canceled Honda F1 project.

The pack comes with AI driver files, helmets, driver suits, gloves and car previews.

To get a more authentic 1999 F1 feeling, make sure to disable traction control and the automatic gearbox the car has since it technically portrays a 2001 car - those driver aids were only allowed from the 2001 Spanish Grand Prix onwards.

1999 F1 Circuits In AMS2

  1. Interlagos 1993 - Pit exit is shorter than it has been since 1999
  2. Imola 2001
  3. Azure Circuit (Monaco) - layout in the final sector and at Ste. Devote is different to 1999
  4. Barcelona (no chicane) - slightly different layout at La Caixa
  5. Montreal - Pit exit is longer than it was in 1999, L'Epingle hairpin was further back in 1999
  6. Silverstone 2001
  7. Red Bull Ring
  8. Hockenheim 2001
  9. Spa-Francorchamps 1993
  10. Monza - Prima Variante was not in place until 2000, but Monza 1991 has different profiles for Curva Grande, Variante della Roggia, and both Lesmos
  11. Nürburgring GP - Mercedes Arena was not built until 2002, Veedol-Schikane was less tight
  12. Kansai GP Classic (Suzuka) - 130R was reprofiled for 2003

The release of the 1999 Season pack means that the Formula V10 Gen 2 car now has three season skin packs available for fans of the era to enjoy.

Aside from this new release, IMMERSION Modding Group has also been hard at work to update their other packs to the standard of AMS2 v1.6. As of writing this article, the 1967, 1978, 1986, 1988 and 1991 season have received this treatment already.

I have this installed already, but have not given it a go with a race yet. I wonder if AI performance is calibrated for aids or no aids? If the latter is the case, one who would want to drive it unaided should have to use a lower AI Strength setting than usual :)

An authentic historical difference both performance-wise and stability/fragility-wise and likely as per team and as per pilot is what I enjoy the most, speaking authentic historic offline events.
I still miss to experience an AMS2 offer - with all due respect - something that can compare with the best F1 season pack mods for rF1 and GTR2 on this matter.

I have previously expressed my satisfaction at driving historic 80s and early 90s F1 grand prix distances in an unstable backmarker car with the extra legbrace of fine balance between nursing and testing the limits.
Here a legbrace of AI challenge level in order not to end up last in the field is just nice extra spice to me.

I will definitely dive into this suggestion this upcoming weekend!

If AM2 could link together their f1 cars in a career mode that would be very cool. So you could run a career with the cars changing every year (or the appropriate year) Would be the ultimate f1 career. Unlike codemasters game where cars look the same despite performance changing.

That's the plan eventually, as far as I remember. Would be great, I totally agree! With the classes they have right now, running seasons from 1990 to 1993 continuously is easily possible, and you could even add in 1988 and just have 1989 spent racing sportscars in your career lore or something similar :)

absolutely loved the liveries of that season, this sounds amazing!
Fully agree! People tended to hate the red Williamses of 1998 and 1999, but the latter in particular is really cool, I think. And the 50/50 BAR is simply iconic :D

Good job. Great for AMS2 F1 fans.
Personally I prefer ACs RSS 1999 F1 cars and the fantastic skin pack from here. Generally I prefer the AI randomness Assettos.
I have some problems enjoying AMS2 AI presets. The idea behind it is great. But I experience over and over again always the same drivers winning or getting the podiums. It’s bit annoying which is a shame

you could even spend some time in Cart, do a Mansell! Or a Villneuve .

Also hope each one has editable logo, do you could use year appropriate FIA logos

Totally agree with you.
If Reiza opens this AMS2 Modding possibility this is the first thing im going to update !
I also like driving the underdog/backmarker car with proper backmarker car physics

An other example of a great racing game made better by the modding community. Reiza supplies a very competent F1 collection with some “real” cars and some generic, a nice collection of historic tracks, Immersion modder supply the proper skins, et voila, we can now immerse ourself in some historic F1 racing.
AMS2 is shaping into a very diverse and competent racing game, I am the first to blame, as I do not play it as much as it deserve, but I am always surprised it is not played more. It is the total package, drives well, look amazing, tons of great cars and track content, not hard on the hardware both in Pancake an de in VR.
Maybe, I am not even sure, it would gain to be more open to “real” modding.

But AMS2 already simulates the mechanical faults and we have control of their rates for the AI. The team specific performances is lacking yes, as the only way to sort of do it is by adjusting the AI skills. But being able to modify the AI power/drag on the custom files was planned for 1.6, but got delayed, so hopefully its introduced soon.

I think the biggest features holding AMS2 back from the likes of GP4 and F1Challenge in terms of recreating historic F1 seasons is the pit strategies, the AI only using the softs tires and their advantage with tire wear performance loss. I dont need all car models, so long as the liveries, performance and overall flow of a real race is properly represented and balanced against the player. That's were GP4 is still unmatched IMHO, if Reiza manages to get those features right, AMS2 can dethrone GP4 for me, specially as running GP4 in modern computers with modern wheels is a pain the @ss.

Well, I like Reiza's fight and much works.

However, I've played quite some with the new scrutineering AI factors in recent ver. 1.6.3 and IMO though vast improvement emulation of breakdown still lacks a lot compared to at least a handful of +10-15 yo rF1/GTR2 mod pack
- or speaking variations of AI car breakdowns, suspension failure, tire puncture, engine overheating, individusl authentic driver talent and so in near 30yo Grsnd Prix 2

I like AMS2 alot. primarily due to near PnP FFB+ delivers some of the most detailedtesponse to my T300RS-GT wheel, plus second to none VR performance, plus easy multi class championship setups, vast number of historical cars and tracks, etc, etc.
However, the AI part is proven one level up by modders and sim developers ages ago. But I reckon Reiza is on tve first stop om a continuated work here. They have proven before via stamina to deliver excellent outputs as in CPBDM, SCx, AMS1 and so on, but domething to look up to here.
