The excitement about Assetto Corsa EVO is undeniable in the sim racing community. At ADAC SimRacing Expo 2024, Kunos Simulazioni shared further details regarding the game's multiplayer, car customization and in-game economy.

After a long wait with little info, more and more detail regarding Assetto Corsa EVO emerges as the first playable pre-alpha version allowed hands-on impressions and direct interaction with Kunos Simulazioni at ADAC SimRacing Expo 2024. At the event, Kunos founder Marco Massarutto and Game Director Davide Brivio shared more details on the eagerly-awaited sim.

Multiplayer Partnership With SimGrid

While many questions focused on the singleplayer side of things as well as more general elements, multiplayer sim racers now also got an interesting bit of info: Kunos partners with SimGrid for the online implementation. "The ambition of AC EVO is huge, and we're here to support the vision for multiplayer", stated SimGrid's CMO Steve Worrell. "This allows Kunos to take care of the core of the game."

This does not mean that SimGrid is the exclusive platform for AC EVO's online part, as Massarutto stated: "We are taking advantage of the expertise of SimGrid, but we want to keep the ecosystem open for activities like leagues." Like AC and ACC, Assetto Corsa EVO will rely on a server-based online model rather than a P2P system.

With the game engine being developed in-house again after ACC's use of Unreal Engine, Kunos keeps the door open to do more with AC EVO down the road, too. "The structure allows us to support the game for many years, maybe even forever", stated Massarutto.

"RPG for petrolheads"

Meanwhile, both singleplayer and multiplayer will see the implementation of an in-game economy and progress system. Players will start with a handful of cash to buy their first car, then work their way up the reputation ladder from there. Car customization will be part of this, and "it will go deeper than just visuals", as Brivio confirmed. Massarutto added: "We want to not just create a career, but an RPG for petrolheads."

As the player progresses, they earn currency - but only in-game, so microtransactions seem to be ruled out of this model. A welcomed approach in an age of games that promote in-game purchases for real money at seemingly every corner. The progress and economy system will not be active for competitive events, as Massarutto specifically mentioned esports. Those who just want to drive any car can also do so by "renting" cars, although "borrowing" might be a more fitting term.

Kunos' founder (the other being Stefano Casillo) also addressed concerns of players that fear that proper racing events might take a back seat, judging from the preview footage available thus far. "We wanted to re-think sim racing, which is strictly dedicated to track-based racing. This is also safe in EVO - we made sure it is there", he ensured. Like in the original Assetto Corsa, a wide range of cars will be available, including GT, Prototype, Formula 1 and vintage machinery.

On the other hand, however, Kunos let their inner petrolheads shine through. "We are all car lovers, go to track days and manager our cars like it is our side job", said Brivio. "This is similar for many sim racers - they love cars." And as many "beautiful cars" do not shine as they should on a track, players will be able to take them to the road instead: "We want players to be able to enjoy every car at its best."

VR & Triple Screen Support On Early Access Launch

Additionally, Massarutto confirmed that VR and triple screen support will be on board already when the Early Access version of AC EVO launches on January 16 - and was overwhelmed by the feedback on the first hands-on version: "We are so glad to see how much love, passion and interest the community puts in our product. It’s the fuel that lets us work on it every day as best as we can. I’m speechless about the great feedback we have already received."

Not sure if its a "younger audience", but more people that want a more complete experience than sit down, race a few laps, move on. That's why i mentioned GT and other games with a career mode, I don't think that a career mode or free roam or customization should be strictly "arcade game" features either.
I didn't mean these features should be dedicated to arcade games only, just that only they exist in arcade games currently and I don't expect them in sims and I surely wouldn't like to have to play the career to fully enjoy the content. Just a personal taste. GT Legends tried that on its time, then we got the unlocker file immediatly.

If the career is winning 3 tracks championships with 3 laps races (the usual way) to unlock higher categories, not sure I'll be interested, especially with non racing cars. If I have to drive boring slow cars during hours to unlock GTs, openwheelers and hypercars, that's a no go for me. I really need to be able to use the sim as I want.

If the career mode is selecting any championship I want to be in, with its specific rules, adding an optional management system like WRC Generations, I'm interested but I shall probably prefer to launch races with specific track car combos or to hotlap. If I can do it freely, Kunos can put any career mode, I'm fine. There is a career mode in AC by the way, someone has played it? I've never read or listened to any comment about it.

Im going to go against the masses, I LOVE the concept of a caRPG, and I love the gran turismo concept, as long as it obviously does not affect people wanting to do sim racing or play with mods online.
Same here. At least they're thinking outside the regular simracing sandbox and that's something that sounds motivating and interesting to my ears. Keep it coming Kunos. I like it.

This is exactly how I feel. Now I am just hoping for some series feature that allows for setting up race series like in CM. I normally do 75mile races in the series I set up. Or 150 miles if I want to spend an hour and a half-ish in the sim. 75 gets me close to 45min a race.

So basically take Forza and Gran Turismo and copy/paste the same thing to a new title. This is like when Project Cars 2 went to Project Cars 3 imo. Nothing wrong with AC or ACC. Why not just play Forza or Gran Turismo at that point?
The thing that killed PCARS3 compared to 2 wasn't having a Gran Turismo-style career mode but something more related to the simulation and reduction of features compared to its predecessor in addition to certain statements of "that PCARS3 was much more simulator than PCARS2" by a certain gentleman.

The Ride series are what I'm picturing. I hope so because its very much the fun part of those games, wanting a specific bike for the next track and actually having to earn it is fun.
I don't think the devs will be silly and make it too much of a grind.

Look at it this way: diamonds have many facets, this diamond just got one more!

As much as understand the need for the studio to expand their scope in order to differentiate there game, I hope and would expect that they they have a track day and a championship option along side the career/progression component.

And do not try and force me to do drift events to progress the game.

I mean, racing is good and all but, i would like to get into the car of my choice and enjoy a long and relaxing drive in a beautiful sunset view. So, my vote goes for free roam. Please add lots and lots of -preferably huge- free roam maps. And lots of cars of course... I mean all iconic road cars, spanning a wide era of car culture.

I agree. A big part of the reason I like real world physics and this free roam option in a sim is that I just really enjoy the basic driving a car experience. Many times I'm not interested in competing or doing the preparation that at least I need to do at my lack of racing talent level, I just want to enjoy that pleasure and the simple challenge of driving which I no longer get in real life. I can think of several really great roads and drives I have done in real life which were delightful in themselves and it is why I was always so attracted to Fat Alfie's creations, Sergio's great historic content and Abulzz's Targa Florio. To be able to do all that with traffic would be bliss. I think Kunos clearly understand this.

Great news. I always thought that AC lacks some kind of career. Well it had a career, bet it was very minimal. Now this seems to be going in the right direction, I really love being able to buy a car, tune it, learn it and grow some bond with it and later buy a something new, but it would be considered mine. Some kind of paint editor would also fit in very well as it would be nice to drive my own cars in multiplayer and have them looking the way I want to. Also such progression systems would make me appreciate more types of cars because at some point I might just need to drive something that I wouldn't if everything was available from the start. I remember I loved the progression in need for speed shift, but it just had wack physics and now this sounds like something similar.

Also its weird to hear so much negative feedback as these features do not mean that regular sim racing features wont be available.

What I meant by that is that I was excited for PC3 after spending multiple hundreds of hours in PC2 and when PC3 came it was an utter and devastating disappointment. I was so beyond hyped for PC3 after PC2 that's why I worded it that way. I am beyond excited for ACEVO, but after what happened with PC3 I am also very hesitant about jumping on any hype train anymore.

I hope they will add a mini cooper series such as mazda cup in iracing (and more racing cars)
