The first big Assetto Corsa EVO open world news has dropped like a bomb on the sim racing world. Upon release, the upcoming title will include over 1600km2 of Lidar-scanned terrain from the Eifel region in Germany.

Available for players to experience as early as the Summer of 2025, Assetto Corsa EVO is expanding sim racers' horizons with a mighty free-roaming experience that faithfully recreates one of the world's most legendary and infamous sections of roads surrounding the Nürburgring. The vast expanse will be added In stages, so do not expect everything all at once.

Complete challenges and races around the roads of the Green Hell to unlock modifications, upgrades and new parts for your cars. Not only will you be able to drive and complete challenges on the roads in Eifel, but you will also be able to interact with local businesses that are actively trading in real life in this section of Germany.

From renting accurately liveried track cars like the Hyundai i30N to kitting out your daily driver with all the best track-focused equipment, this could undoubtedly be one of the most revolutionary free-roaming experiences ever debuted in sim racing.

With famous companies Rent4Ring and RSRNürburg in the game, the player will be brought into an ultra-realistic setting that perfectly replicates the roads surrounding the Nürburgring's surrounding roads. Kunos offers local brands and companies the option to include their store in the title. This level of commitment to recreation is fantastic, especially at such a crucial pre-release stage.

Assetto Corsa EVO is scheduled to be released in 2025. However, the early access period on January 16th will come first. This date has been reaffirmed within this first big release and is still progressing as planned.

what is supposed to be a racing sim
they probably understood that there is bigger market on free roams looking at activity in AC1 where most of playerbase doesn't even care about racing itself and this is basically the biggest sim on PC + the very tiny simracing niche becoming very saturated atm - all 4 sims means iR, LMU, Raceroom and AMS2 doing nice progress recently and are worth playing imo depends of the content u like more basically and with Raceroom and AMS2 being added to LFM all of them also will be decent online platforms
so even if I don't care about it and I'm not hyped at all about this game since ACC to me was completely unreasonably overrated game (weak ffb, many physics glitches but also graphic wise - people that praise this blurry garbage with running shadows and popups everywhere must be blind I swear) and AC was saved by modders but even to this day it has problems with curbs and bigger bumps interactions since the modders did their job with graphics and maps more than well they didn't do as much if anything in physics department - they for sure identified the audience they should target for well since like I already said most people on AC1 just do free roams not racing itself and things like ETS are also much more popular than any simracing title ever been so it isn't coincidence

Totally underwhelmed from that video. Looks like the new Forza or GT. I don't want to complete tasks for upgrades to road cars. No interest. Never liked free roam. Businesses in the area could be in the game as long as they paid big money. It wasn't happening for free I'm sure.
People complain about the upcharging for AMS2 or LMU. Get ready for a whole new level of upcharging.

Pretty sure AC was an attempt to emulate Gran Turismo as a sim orientated game on the PC and ended up being successful due to its own character rather then what it attempted to be.

Now it seems they are trying to emulate Forza Horizon as a sim orientated game on the PC, which no doubt will end up having its own unique character.

Don't know if its for me, But time will tell.

Check out the top 10 most downloaded AC mod tracks on this website. That should clue you in to why Kunos is kicking EVO off with an open world track. Obviously EVO is gonna have circuits although why would it be exciting to use that to promote the game? BTDT. I care absolutely nothing about circuits in EVO other than Nords. For those that dig circuits, trust your appetite will be satiated. I want touge and open world roads to drive. I've put more miles on LA Canyons, Trento Bondone and similar tracks than all the traditional circuits in AC combined. I'm glad Kunos has been paying attention to what a large amount of the community has actually been driving for all these years.

Update: Check out the most played driving games on Steam for 2024. BeamNG is number #1 and its nothing but open world. Forza 4 and 5 are 2nd and 3rd. AC is 4th. This strongly suggests that if Kunos put out an open world map they would likely boost their player numbers. Interestingly enough ACC is 7th.

Well with those 2 titles I get it, they're unfinished... And you have to have faith that the developer will finish the job...

But I completely agree, so many avenues for profit out of this from Kunos... I don't expect much movement from the modding core until the tools are out there publicly... As Kunos will want to get the most out of their planned DLCs and not have modded versions out there for people to get the free version...

And with competing products out there they could up the anty with the bidding wars... Leading things like Starbucks replacing the local coffee shop near Nords...

Lot of negativity. Personally I think it looks great.

Circuit sims are already on the market, in spades. The whole sim genre is stagnated. This will be the first SIM with open world, it's breaking new ground. Road cars should have roads to drive on.

The circuit portion has gravity based water physics, track that dries from the actual driving lines, not in a scripted path. Also next level. But I see people just complaining how this "ruins it"?

It does sound VERY ambitious, how can a small team handle what essentially looks like two games? Even the 1600 km2 map alone sounds insane. But AC1 already had similar content, Highlands and Black Cat County. This is just evolution of that

You can go see the entire map right now in Google Street View. I wouldn't exactly call it "modeling a few sheds" if they really do this. It has multiple beautiful and very large towns

Basically like the mod track "Aspertsham" but it never ends

A lot of the people here are a bit blindsided by this but the truth of the matter is that AC is, to most people, a driving simulator more than a racing simulator. I actually would say that AC is a pretty bad racing sim in that it's pretty mediocre at simulating motorsports outside of just how good the cars drive. The AI isn't very good, there's very few tools to enforce good behavior, the mechanical damage model isn't great, there isn't much support for any kind of racing rules more complex than just simple timed/lapped races, etc.

AC Evo is Kunos, thankfully, realizing that MOST people played the first game to drive cars on the tokyo highways, or freeroam in the LA canyons, or drift or hoon or do frankly anything but race. And I'm glad for it. I do not want another sim full of the same racing cars that no one even drives because all they do is drive GT3 anyway. There are like 10 sims where you can race GT3's. One of the games in the AC series is entirely about them. AC Evo is doing something no one has ever done before--earnestly try to make a realistic racing game about driving civilian cars on public roads and buying and tuning them.

And there is a big market for that. I can guarantee that. I've commented before that racing sims actually appeal not really to car guys, but the very specific kind of car guy that likes motorsports. I know many many people into cars, being a gearhead myself, and literally like, none of them care about racing sims, because their interest in cars are almost exclusively about ones you can actually own and hooning them on the streets. They play games like NFS, Gran Turismo, Forza, CarX Drift, BeamNG, and the like not because they don't want to play a realistic racing sim, but all the realistic racing games have tunnel-visioned on motorsports for the past three decades.

You know what the one racing sim they do actually have an interest in is, though? Assetto Corsa, because of the wealth of freeroam, drift, and civilian car content available for it. Kunos is targeting an audience that basically has not been served by the entire racing game industry in its existence. Don't be surprised when this game does numbers on Steam most sims can only dream of.

I'm afraid that's an apt line of reasoning.

Before I missed the opportunity for sim time, I managed, among other things, a lot of long-distance endurance in my rig in VR at e.g the historic 1957 Pescara (Italotracks) and 1973 Targa Florio (Abulzz) in classic Italian 60s and early 70s vintage sports cars, warm-up practicing before races in full traffic of small covered vans , vintage motorbikes and small everyday cars of the time.
As they did back then. I basically only needed models of kid goats, children and wooden cats to run out in front of my Bizzarrini 5300 GT Corsa.

But in addition there was the main event. where you test your skills behind the wheel to the limit with classic virtues in car control.
I.e. the simracing part with emphasis on 'racing' and 'corsa'.

Of course there HAVE to be a sequel. With improved physics engine, gameplay options more dedicated to endurance and better AI and AIW-line options than what AC developer mode and CM can help with for AC1.

Of course, Kunos can do this sort of thing even if Aris and other core workers have left the building.

And to talk condescendingly about the perfectly logical desire?
It is truly toxic.

It's a business and sales are the primary focus. Assetto Luigario Karting coming up next, but maybe following a "Need for FastnFurious" DLC for EVO prior to have the payback cop chase mass market appeal. : https://www.goodwood.com/grr/race/modern/2021/4/the-six-best-selling-racing-games-of-all-time/

Plus Asseto at estimated $101,111,339 gross and $29,827,845.02 net
to how much fail Forza has had with $19,554,926 gross and $5,768,703.18 net
The target is elsewhere, just look to the numbers.

I'll say it again. I love it, and that is exactly what I wished for, what does not exist on the market: sim racing that is not just limited to racing circuits. I don't understand why people need to hate it. You can still drive circuits. However, I wonder how they will implement this freeroaming aspect. I hope there will be traffic rules and cops. It would be nice to push a little on public roads, but not that much as to get into trouble, but later let it all out on the track when you reach it.

AC1 had a similar "jack of all trades" approach, although more limited, it did have point to point, drag racing, and the cars themselves were a mixed offering. AC Evo isnt doing something that can be considered wildly different in my opinion.
I hope so. I liked the approach of the original game.

B/c Kunos has proven dedicated to racing lore, we need not worry it will be too arcade like. They have many strengths to play with. I don't like ACC, but they moved away from Real Engine for EVO. I'm a first day buyer from what I've. Not really into free roam, but I can change my mind.

Both pointless in what is supposed to be a racing sim
And the thing is, this is NOT intended to be a racing sim, it’s a car enthusiast game, just like GT and Horizon. I would not call its career mode a "career", because that implies a race driver career, you are a car enthusiast who mostly drives road cars, gets some track days, eventually with enough grinding and in game credits, you will be allowed to touch an actual race car. LOL

If this is going to be a Forza Horizon clone, I am not in the least bit interested. I love Assetto Corsa as it is a simracing product. If this is going to be Needy for Forza Speedy Underground Most Wanted Horizon, I will pass thanks.

In all my years of driving round Donington in AC, I have never once felt the need to go and get on the A453 and drive to Tonge.

Absolutely no way in hell this is going to have the shelf life and longevity that AC has had. I really have to wonder what the hell Kunos are playing at going in this direction.

Unfathomable to me that Micha has now 1,61 mio subs.
Enterede his channel when he teased for 10k subs. But ofc exploded in views with celebs like Kubica and his Cov-19 confinement collab with Shmee150 and Robert Michell, especially stressing validity of the Shelby American 300 mph project, i.e. "the other Shelby American".

As always fully likeable.
But still. One should not exclude the other.
